Miami to offer new Engineering doctorate beginning this fall

A new Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degree for ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ has been approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.
¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ’s new Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering degree has been approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

This latest step followed approvals by Miami’s University Senate and Board of Trustees in February. The new Ph.D. degree will be offered this fall.

An interdisciplinary degree offered in collaboration between the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) and the Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Science, the flexibility of the new program’s curriculum will allow ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs to fully engage in interdisciplinary study and research.

Upon completion of the program, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs will earn a Ph.D. in Engineering with a concentration in one of the following areas: Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Robotics and Automation Engineering, or Engineering Physics.

“The newly approved interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Engineering unlocks a significant era of opportunity for our Engineering and Engineering Physics faculty,” said Beena Sukumaran, the Dinesh and Ila Paliwal Dean of the College of Engineering and Computing. “This program will enable them to collaborate with talented graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs on groundbreaking research, fueling their own research agendas and allowing them to pursue more competitive grants. Ultimately, this Ph.D. program will empower our faculty to further their passion for discovery and cultivate their growth as impactful teacher-scholars.”

Marnie Saunders, associate dean for Graduate Studies, Research, and Innovation in CEC, expects the new Ph.D. program to enhance Miami’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) research reputation and capacity and ability to attract top faculty and ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ talent.

“This advanced research environment will directly enrich the undergraduate STEM experience by creating opportunities for undergraduates to participate in cutting-edge research projects alongside Ph.D. ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs and faculty, attend specialized seminars, access advanced laboratory facilities, and receive mentorship from researchers who are leaders in their fields, ultimately inspiring their own scientific curiosity and preparing them for advanced studies or careers in STEM,” Saunders said.

The new doctoral program follows three new master’s degrees in Engineering implemented last fall, as well as Ohio’s first-ever B.S. in Quantum Computing degree, which begins at CEC this fall.
Established in 1809, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ is located in Oxford, Ohio, with regional campuses in Hamilton and Middletown, a learning center in West Chester, and a European study center in Luxembourg.
