The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) now requires health care providers to deliver care that is person-centered which is a new goal that can be challenging to implement. Miami’s Scripps Center for Gerontology will develop an online professional certification in preference-based, person-centered care (PBPCC) for health professionals of all disciplines (direct care worker through administrator) who work in long-term services and supports (such as nursing home, assisted living, home care, adult day health).

The content includes aspects of delivering high quality PBPCC -- from the assessment process to integrating preferences into care and performing quality improvement activities. The goal is to ensure that care is congruent or fulfilled from the perspective of the individuals receiving care. Tailoring care to the preferences of each individual improves their satisfaction with care, quality of care, and quality of life.

Leveraging the national reputation of the Scripps Gerontology Center, this cutting-edge certification will enable healthcare providers to differentiate themselves but more importantly, it will work to shift the culture of long-term care away from a medical model (where care is provided according to what works best for the organization to a person-centered approach that emphasizes “knowing the person” and honoring each individual’s preferences.
